Alissa Allen of Mycopigments takes us on a visual tour of the vibrant wild dye-producing mushrooms and lichens found on the Olympic Peninsula. This presentation introduces the concepts of foraging for color, including identification principles, ethical harvest practices, and citizen science. She’ll detail the process from start to finish, showcasing species that can be found in the region.
After her presentation, Alissa will facilitate a hands-on demonstration. Using a selection of locally abundant dye species. Participants will produce a wide range of vibrant colors on wool yarn that will then be arranged for a personal display.
In addition to the colorful dyed samples, participants will take home Alissa's comprehensive booklet, which includes a guide to the best local dye species. This workshop offers a solid foundation for students to continue their mushroom and lichen dye journey.
